Determine the objective(s)

Because the objectives are the reference points that guide the survey, it is important to pin them down before beginning the survey process. Your objectives will influence the survey design and deployment.

When making decisions on the target audience, the demographic questions, and the survey structure, you can return to the statement of objectives to ensure that what is being asked will achieve the desired result. Our survey experts can help create objectives for your survey so you have the proper framework to guide other survey decisions.

Obtain commitment

The results of the survey will probably be used to change or shape programs, products or services. To produce the right kind of data that will help steer these decisions, it's crucial to make sure that the people who requested the survey are committed to, and involved in, the survey process.

Identify and know how to contact survey respondents (the target audience)

When identifying potential survey respondents and determining how to reach them, some useful questions to ask are:

  • How big is the potential base?
  • Will all respondents in the group be surveyed, or only a portion of the respondents?
  • If only a portion of the respondents will be surveyed, will you survey a random sample of the group or a specific subset of the group?
SurveyConnect’s survey experts can walk you through these options and help you select the right approach for your survey deployment.

Construct the survey

Like most projects, thorough and careful preparation of the survey will pay off in the end. Write out the kind of outcome, information and analysis that you want to obtain, and then design your survey based upon these specific needs — always keeping the respondent in mind.

In constructing a survey you should determine the survey topics, create questions that reflect on those topics, and design the appropriate response scale options.

Other important considerations at this stage of the survey program are the length of the survey, determining any demographic categories that need to be included, and deciding on the respondent security needed for the deployment.

Whether you are writing the survey or we are, SurveyConnect has a library of questions (organized by topics) that can help in this process. Our advisors can also share best practices in the creation of your survey.
